- Today I bought an album (see below). It’s the soundtrack to a 1965 romantic comedy set in Brazil.
- The glorious kitsch of the sleeve and Eumir Deodato‘s name made it initially stand out.
- He composed ‘2001 Also Sprach Zarathustra’ and brought the funk on occasion.
- Turns out Astrud Gilberto sang a mesmeric version of the title track.
- And this album could not be more gloriously romantic, cheeky or hip-nudging.
- Of course this is as much a mythologised, cinematic version of a well-known Latin American country (what, no favelas?) as The Ladykillers represents merrie old London.
- Thus it’s all the more better as a result, no doubt.
- This is music to swoon by.
